What is a Tone?

In many languages, tones are variations in pitch that can change the meaning of words. For Mandarin Chinese, there are four main tones:

Tone 1 (High level)

A relatively high, flat tone

Tone 2 (Rising)

Starts at a medium pitch and rises to a high pitch

Tone 3 (Low dipping)

Starts low, dips lower, then rises

Tone 4 (Falling)

Starts high and drops sharply
