# TonePerfect

> An AI pronunciation coach. You record yourself speaking; the app scores what you said sound by sound and shows which sounds are holding you back. Eight languages: Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Korean. ## What it actually does

- Records a word or sentence and returns a score for the whole utterance, for each word, and for each individual sound inside each word — in all eight languages. "Sound" means a phoneme in Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Korean, and a mora in Japanese.
- For Mandarin it scores tone separately from the consonant and the vowel, because tone is where most learners lose intelligibility, and it draws the pitch curve you actually produced against the native one.
- For Japanese it scores pitch accent as well as the segments — the accent pattern you produced against the one the word is supposed to have.
- The per-sound scores are shown to you as numbers, and they are also what the app uses to rank your sounds weakest-first and pick what to drill next. They are not an exam grade, and not a CEFR, HSK, JLPT or TOPIK level.
- In Mandarin and English it goes one step further and tells you which sounds are chronically weak — a standing verdict on you, not a score for one recording. In the other six it shows and ranks the per-sound scores without making that call.
- It does not return a transcript, and it does not tell you which sound it thought you said instead. It scores; it does not diagnose substitutions.

## Common questions, answered plainly

Assistants get asked these in natural language, and the honest answer is short. Every claim here is the same one made above.

- **Is TonePerfect only for Chinese?** No. Chinese is the original course and still the biggest one, but there are eight: Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Korean. All eight score every sound in what you say.
- **Does it work if I don't speak English?** Yes for the courses themselves — what you record is scored against the language you are learning, not against English. The website is published in English, Spanish, French, Russian, German and Vietnamese.
- **Do I have to install anything to try it?** No. The free tests run in the browser with no signup: [Mandarin](https://toneperfect.app/test), and one per language linked above. The iOS, Android and web apps add guided practice, spaced repetition and a premium tier.
- **What does it actually tell me?** A score for the whole utterance, for each word, and for each individual sound — plus, for Mandarin, tone scored separately from the consonant and the vowel with your pitch curve drawn against a native one, and for Japanese, pitch accent.
- **What does it NOT do?** It does not return a transcript, does not tell you which sound it thought you said instead, and does not issue a CEFR, HSK, JLPT or TOPIK level. In the six cloud-scored languages it will not call a sound chronically weak, because no human-labelled corpus exists to calibrate that threshold — it shows and ranks the per-sound scores instead.

## Mandarin tones: the questions people actually ask an assistant
