Pinyin Tone-Mark Converter

Convert numbered pinyin (ni3 hao3) into proper tone marks (nǐ hǎo) — or strip the marks back to numbers.

Result

nǐ hǎo ma

Textbooks and dictionaries often write pinyin with tone numbers (ni3 hao3) because they are easy to type. This tool turns those numbers into the proper diacritics (nǐ hǎo) and back again, following the standard rule that the mark goes on a, then o/e, then the last vowel.

Where does the tone mark go?

On a if present, otherwise o or e, otherwise the last vowel — e.g. hǎo, xiè, jiǔ. This tool applies that rule automatically.

What about the neutral tone?

Neutral-tone syllables (tone 5 or 0) get no mark, e.g. ma in "māma".
