Best Apps for HSK Speaking and Pronunciation Practice

TonePerfect··7 {minutes} мин чтения

There is an odd gap in the Chinese app market. Dozens of products will drill you on HSK vocabulary, run mock exams and track your reading speed. Almost none of them prepare you to open your mouth.

That matters, because the spoken exam is a separate test. The official Chinese Testing International site describes the HSKK as having three levels — elementary, intermediate and advanced — and states that it is conducted in the form of an audio recording. Guidance published by the University of Sheffield's Confucius Institute maps those levels onto HSK 1–2, HSK 3–4 and HSK 5–6, with a total score of 100 and a pass mark of 60 at each level.

An audio recording, graded by a human, of you speaking Mandarin. Nothing about a vocabulary flashcard app prepares you for that.

Here is what to actually use, checked on 10 August 2026.

The honest state of the market

ToolWhat it coversSpeaking
SuperTest (formerly HSK Online)Mock exams and question banks, HSK 1–6Listening, reading, writing — speaking not advertised
SkritterCharacter handwriting with SRS; HSK 1–6 and HSK 3.0 levels 1–9 decksNo learner recording described
Super ChineseFull course path, roughly HSK 1 to HSK 5Records you; marks characters green or red, tone-aware
HelloChineseStructured course built around HSK levelsSpeech recognition; granularity not published
Du ChineseGraded reading, difficulty-levelledNone
Pinyin Trainer (trainchinese)Tone and initial discrimination drillsRecognition only — you tap, you do not speak
TonePerfectPronunciation only; HSK-1 path plus any pasted textPer-syllable initial, final and tone scoring

Two things stand out. First, none of these advertises HSKK preparation by name. Second, only two of them tell you anything about a spoken syllable, and only one breaks the syllable into parts.

This is not a scandal. The written HSK is where the demand and the money are. But if you are sitting the HSKK, you have to assemble your own preparation.

What the spoken exam actually asks of you

Across the three HSKK levels the tasks broadly involve listening and repeating, answering questions, and speaking at length on a prompt, all recorded. Two consequences follow.

One: you must be intelligible to a human grader, not to a recogniser. A speech recognition system inside a lesson knows which sentence it asked for and can match your attempt even when tones are flat. A human examiner with a recording has no such prior. Wrong tones do not get quietly forgiven.

Two: you must be fluent at speed. Reading a sentence aloud slowly while looking at it is a different skill from producing it in real time. Both need practising, in that order.

Building a preparation stack that works

Step 1 — Get the vocabulary in your mouth, not just your eyes

Take the vocabulary list for your level and say every item out loud, scored. This sounds tedious and is over faster than you think — HSK 1 is a small list, and most learners find their errors cluster in a handful of sounds.

The failures are predictable. From HSK 1 alone:

PinyinHanziMeaningWhat usually goes wrong
shìto beretroflex sh- fronted to s-
qǐngpleaseq- said as ch-; -ing final flattened
xièxie谢谢thank youx- said as sh-; neutral tone given full weight
zhōngguó中国Chinazh- loses its curl; second tone on guó does not rise
nǚ'ér女儿daughterü unrounded to u; -r final anglicised

Our HSK 1 vocabulary list with tones is a reasonable place to work from, and the full level lists live on the HSK section of the site.

Step 2 — Fix by component, not by word

When a word fails, do not just repeat it louder. Find out which of the three parts broke.

A Mandarin syllable has an initial, a final and a tone, and each can fail on its own. If 请 (qǐng) comes back wrong, it could be the q-, the -ing, or a third tone that never dipped. Repeating the whole word twenty times without knowing which one is a slow way to reinforce the error.

This is the specific reason a component-level scorer is worth having for exam prep: it converts "wrong" into a task. TonePerfect reports the initial, final and tone separately for every syllable and shows your pitch curve against the native one. Run a level's worth of vocabulary through the free Chinese pronunciation test and you will have a list of your five real problems within an hour.

Step 3 — Rebuild into sentences at speed

Isolated syllables are not the exam. Once the components are clean, put them back into full sentences and read them aloud at conversational pace. Then say them without looking.

Paste your own material into the practice tool — exam-style prompts, self-introductions, the answers you would give to predictable questions about your job and your hometown.

Step 4 — Add a human before the exam

Two or three sessions with a tutor in the month before the test is money well spent, and it is best spent late. Go in already knowing which sounds are broken; a teacher can then work on articulation and delivery rather than spending the first session finding your errors for you.

A note on cost

None of this needs to be expensive, and the money is easy to misallocate. Prices below were read from each vendor's own pages or US App Store listings on 10 August 2026, in USD, and vary by country and promotion.

ToolCost
SuperTest (HSK Online)Free with in-app purchases; membership from $5.99 for a month
SkritterPremium in-app purchases from $9.99 for a month
Super ChinesePLUS in-app purchases from $11.99 for a month
Du Chinese$14.99 for 1 month, $119.99 for 12 months
Pinyin TrainerFree with in-app purchases; Pinyin Tutor upgrade $2.99
TonePerfectFree daily allowance; premium from $4.99/month
A tutor for exam rehearsalPriced per lesson; italki trials commonly start around $5

The pattern worth avoiding is buying an exam question bank in month one and a tutor in the final week. The question bank is most useful late, once you know the material and need timing practice. Pronunciation work is most useful early, before errors set. Most learners do it the other way round.

Which app for which level

HSK 1–2 (HSKK elementary). Your problem is the sound system, not vocabulary. Spend most of your time on pinyin and tones. Work through the pinyin chart syllable by syllable, then drill the HSK 1 list aloud. HelloChinese is a good structural spine here.

HSK 3–4 (HSKK intermediate). Vocabulary volume starts to matter and so does reading speed. Super Chinese covers roughly this range with speaking embedded in lessons, and Du Chinese builds the reading fluency the written paper tests. Keep drilling pronunciation on new vocabulary as you meet it rather than fixing it later.

HSK 5–6 (HSKK advanced). By this point pronunciation errors are fossilised and only targeted work removes them. Most learners at this level have a small, stable set of sounds they have got wrong for years without knowing it. A component-level diagnosis is worth more here than any amount of new material.

The one-line summary

Exam-prep apps prepare you for the written HSK. Course apps teach you Chinese. Neither is built for the HSKK, and no one we checked claims to be.

Assemble it yourself: vocabulary from your HSK level, said out loud, scored per syllable, rebuilt into sentences, then rehearsed with a human. It is not complicated. It is just the part everyone skips, and it is the part the spoken exam is entirely about.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Is there an app that prepares you for the HSKK speaking test?+

Nothing we checked in August 2026 advertises HSKK preparation specifically. Exam-prep apps focus on the written HSK — listening, reading and writing. The practical approach is to use an HSK vocabulary source for content and a pronunciation scorer to rehearse saying it aloud, since HSKK is recorded and graded on spoken output.

What is the HSKK?+

The HSKK is the spoken counterpart to the HSK. The official Chinese Testing International site states it has three levels — elementary, intermediate and advanced — and that the test is conducted in the form of an audio recording. Confucius Institute guidance maps those levels to HSK 1–2, 3–4 and 5–6 respectively.

Do HSK exam-prep apps include speaking?+

Generally not. SuperTest (formerly HSK Online), one of the best-known question banks, describes mock exams for HSK 1 to 6 covering listening, reading and writing. Speaking is not part of what its store listing advertises. It is a strong tool for the written paper and not designed for the spoken one.

How should I practise speaking for HSK if I have no tutor?+

Work from the vocabulary list for your level. Say each word aloud, get it scored, and fix the syllables that fail before moving on. Then build the same words into full sentences and repeat. The exam records you, so rehearsing silently in your head is the one method guaranteed not to work.

Does TonePerfect cover HSK?+

It has an HSK-1 pronunciation path and lets you paste any text, so you can drill vocabulary and sentences from any HSK level with per-syllable feedback. It is a pronunciation trainer rather than an exam-prep course, so it does not replace grammar and reading study.
