2つの「th」
英語には無声の「th」（think）と有声の「th」（this）があります。どちらかでも持つ言語はごくわずかで、日本語ではサ行・ザ行に置き換わりがちです。どちらも同じ位置 — 舌先を上の前歯に当てて息を流す — で、舌で弾くことはありません。違いは一つだけ：「this」では声が震え、「think」では震えません。
日本語では区別しない母音のペア
英語は日本語より母音の数がずっと多いので、「ship」と「sheep」、「cat」と「bed」、「cup」と「cat」のようなペアが一つの音にまとまってしまいます。直すべきなのはたいてい舌ではなく、母音の開き具合・長さ・力の抜き方です。「see」は長く緊張して唇を横に引き、「sit」は短くゆるく。
語の強勢とシュワー
英語では単語の中の一音節が強く、残りはしばしばシュワー — 「about」の、口がほとんど動かない弱い母音 — に縮みます。すべての音節に同じ重さを与えると、丁寧ですが外国語らしく聞こえます。弱い音節の力を抜くことは、どの単音の練習にも劣らず重要です。
語尾の子音と子音連続
日本語では単語が子音で終わることはほとんどありませんが、英語では常にあり、しかも重なります：「world」はrld、「friend」はndで終わります。語尾を落とすと意味が変わるので、小さくてもすべての最後の音を言う価値があります。「sing」の「ng」は最後に何も破裂させずに終わります。
つづりは音ではない
英語のつづりは発音の手がかりとしては頼りになりません。同じ文字が別の音になり（現在形の「read」と過去形の「read」）、別の文字が同じ音になります。だからTonePerfectは、つづりを信じるように求めるのではなく、あなたが実際に発した音を一音ずつ採点します。
