Most "best app for learning Chinese" lists are written for English speakers and quietly assume an English speaker's problems. If your first language is Japanese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese, roughly half that advice is aimed at a difficulty you do not have, and the difficulty you actually have goes unmentioned.
Your first language decides which Mandarin sounds break. That should decide which tool you buy.
Start from the error, not the app
Here is the honest map. These are general tendencies rather than rules about any individual, but they hold often enough to plan around.

Notice that the tonal-language speakers and the non-tonal-language speakers need almost opposite things. A Thai speaker does not need a lesson explaining that pitch changes meaning. They need to know that their Mandarin second tone is arriving as a Thai rising tone, which is close but not the same shape. That is a fine-grained problem, and a green tick will never reveal it.
The Japanese speaker's specific situation
Japanese learners of Chinese have an unusual profile: enormous reading advantage, real speaking disadvantage.
The reading advantage is obvious. 学生, 電話, 図書館 — a Japanese speaker meets Chinese text already knowing what a large share of it means. Vocabulary apps and graded readers therefore give a lot less lift than they would to an English speaker, who has to learn every character from scratch.
The speaking disadvantage is less discussed. Japanese phonology is compact: five vowels, a simple mora structure, one liquid, and no retroflex consonants. Mandarin asks for several distinctions that simply do not exist:

And on top of every one of these sits a tone. This is the crux: a Japanese speaker's failed syllable usually has two things wrong at once — a consonant substitution and a tone error. An app that returns a single verdict on the syllable cannot tell you that, so you fix the tone, still get marked wrong, and conclude that tones are impossible.
Japanese pitch accent is a genuine asset here, incidentally. Speakers are already used to pitch carrying lexical information. What differs is that Japanese accent is about where the pitch drops across a word, while Mandarin tone is a contour shape inside each syllable. The instinct transfers; the unit does not.
The Thai and Vietnamese speaker's specific situation
If your language already has tones, you skip the hardest conceptual step in Mandarin and land straight in a subtler one.
Thai has five phonemic tones; Vietnamese, in its northern standard, has six. The concept is native. The problem is substitution: your ear maps a Mandarin tone onto the nearest tone you already own and your mouth produces that instead. The result is speech that sounds confident, is mostly understood, and never quite converges on native contours.
The Mandarin third tone is where this shows up most. Its full form falls, sits low, then rises — but in connected speech it usually stays low without the rise, and when two third tones meet, the first becomes a second tone. 你好 is written nǐ hǎo and said níhǎo. For a tonal-language speaker, the useful feedback is not "your tone was wrong". It is a picture of the shape you produced against the shape you were aiming for. Substitution errors are visible instantly as a curve that is the right general direction and the wrong slope.
What this means for choosing an app
Given all that, the criteria change.
Deprioritise vocabulary volume if you are Japanese or Korean. Character recognition is not your bottleneck. Paying for a graded reader before your consonants work is optimising the wrong thing.
Deprioritise tone explanation if you are Thai or Vietnamese. You do not need the four-tones-of-Mandarin lesson for the fifth time.
Prioritise separated feedback. You want to know whether the fault was the initial, the final, or the tone, because your first language predicts errors in more than one of those at the same time.
Most Chinese apps do not offer this. Checked in August 2026: Du Chinese and Skritter do not record you at all; HelloChinese and Rosetta Stone record you but do not publish how granular the check is; Super Chinese marks characters green or red with tone awareness but does not break the syllable down; Ka tells you if a word or tone was mispronounced. None of them publish an initial-final-tone split.

A practical starting routine
- Diagnose first. Run twenty common syllables and record which of the three components fails most. Do not guess.
- Fix the biggest cluster. For most Japanese and Korean speakers it is the retroflex series; for most Thai and Vietnamese speakers it is contour precision on tones 2 and 3.
- Use the syllable inventory, not word lists. The pinyin chart lets you hear every Mandarin syllable in all four tones, which is the fastest way to find the ones your language has no slot for.
- Rebuild in your own sentences. Paste text you would actually say into the practice tool rather than drilling textbook lines.
- Recheck monthly. Pronunciation improvement is invisible day to day and obvious across four weeks.
The short version
There is no single best Mandarin app for Japanese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese speakers, and any list that gives you one has not thought about your first language.
What there is: a predictable set of errors your language makes likely, and a small number of tools that can tell those errors apart. Choose for the feedback, not the feature list. Then spend your time on the two or three sounds that are actually costing you intelligibility, instead of the fifty that already work.
