How it works
- 1
Allow the mic
The checker runs in your browser. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
- 2
Say the phrase
Read the characters aloud with the pinyin as a guide, at your normal speaking pace.
- 3
See each syllable
Every syllable comes back with a score for its tone, its initial and its final, so you see exactly which part slipped.
What the checker listens for in Mandarin
Mandarin has four tones plus a light neutral tone, and a wrong tone can turn one word into another. The checker splits every syllable into three parts and scores each one on its own, so you can tell whether 'shì' failed because of the sh-, the -i or the falling fourth tone.
The usual trouble spots are the third tone (start low and let your voice drop), flat versus retroflex pairs like z and zh, n versus l, and front versus back nasals such as -n and -ng. These are the same sounds the full test and the app drill hardest.
Quick check or full test: which to use
Use the checker for a fast read on one phrase. Use the full Mandarin pronunciation test when you want a broader result: 12 short prompts with pinyin and audio, about 3–5 minutes, and a report on your tones, initials and finals with a focus for your next practice.
Scores run from 0 to 100 and rank your own sounds against each other. They are not an exam grade or an HSK level. Look for the lowest part, fix it, then say the phrase again and watch that one number move.
Questions
Is the Mandarin pronunciation checker free?+
Yes. The checker and the full test both run in your browser for free with no account. Create a free account only if you want to keep your report.
How is my Mandarin scored?+
Your recording is compared with native speech syllable by syllable. Each syllable gets separate scores for its tone, its initial and its final, from 0 to 100.
Does it check my tones or only the sounds?+
Both. Tones are scored on every syllable alongside the initial and the final, so a correct sound with the wrong tone still shows up.
How is this different from the full test?+
The checker gives you a quick result on one phrase. The full test uses 12 prompts and takes about 3–5 minutes, so it covers far more tones and sounds and points you to what to practise next.
