How it works

  1. 1

    Type your Russian

A word, a phrase or a full sentence in Cyrillic, up to 120 characters.

  2. 2

    Say it aloud

Tap the mic and read it at your normal pace.

  3. 3

    See the weak sound

Each word and sound comes back scored, with the weakest sound named. Fix it and check again.

Scoring runs on a commercial-grade speech-assessment engine that evaluates every sound in every word. Russian scores are relative: they rank your sounds against each other to locate your weak spots — no pass/fail bars and no invented accuracy percentages.

What the checker listens for in Russian

The ы vowel is the classic slip: say 'ee', then pull the tongue back with relaxed lips, as in 'быть'. Swap in 'ee' and мы becomes ми. Next come soft consonants — the difference between брат and брать — made by pressing the tongue body up to the palate.

The rolled р in 'рука' is the third: a tap or trill of the tongue tip, never the English r. The checker also catches the long soft щ in 'ещё' and the hard, dark ш. One honest note: word stress is not judged, so use the scores for sounds and your ear for stress.

Checker or test: which to use

Use the checker for your own text, whatever you have to say next. Use the Russian pronunciation test for an overview: five guided words in about a minute, sounds ranked weakest first.

Scores run from 0 to 100 and rank your sounds against each other; they are not an exam grade or a certificate. Practise the sound named weakest, then check the same text again.

The sounds that decide your accent

the 'ы' sound (быть)

Say 'ee' but pull the whole tongue back and down slightly, lips relaxed (not smiling). It feels like 'ee' said in the throat. Try б-ы: быть, сыр, мы.

бытьжекоторый

soft (palatalized) consonants — брат vs брать

Almost every Russian consonant comes in a hard and a soft version. For soft ть, the tongue tip stays at the teeth while the tongue body presses up to the palate; it can sound almost like a very light 'ts'. This is the difference between брат and брать.

матьбытьсказать

the rolled 'р' sound (раз)

Tap or roll the tongue tip against the ridge behind the teeth — like Spanish 'r'. Start by saying 'd-d-d' quickly and let the tip flutter. Never the English 'r'.

разкоторыйрука

the soft 'рь' sound (теперь)

Roll the r while the tongue body squeezes up toward the palate — 'ry' in one sound. One of the hardest Russian sounds; start slow: ря, ри, рё.

теперьговоритьвремя

the 'щ' sound (женщина)

A LONG soft 'sh' with the tongue far forward — like 'fresh sheets' said quickly as one hiss. Never the hard, dark ш; hold it a beat longer.

женщинаещётоварищ

the 'ш' sound (школа)

'sh' with the tongue pulled BACK and the lips slightly rounded — deeper and darker than English 'sh'. Always hard: ши sounds like 'shy', never 'shee'.

школабольшойхороший

Scores rank your own sounds against each other so you know what to drill first. They are not an accuracy certificate and not an exam grade.
