What the checker listens for in English
English spelling is a poor guide to sound, so the checker scores what you actually say, sound by sound. The two 'th' sounds come up most: the quiet one in 'think' and the buzzing one in 'this', both made with the tongue tip against the top teeth. Next come r and l, which 'really' makes you switch between in one short word.
Vowel pairs are the other big one: 'ship' and 'sheep' can collapse into the same word when the short vowel is not kept short and loose. The checker also catches a v that drifts toward w or b, as in 'very', and dropped final consonants like the rld at the end of 'world'.
Checker or test: which to use
Use the checker for your own text: the word you have to say tomorrow, a sentence you keep tripping over, a name. Use the English pronunciation test when you want a quick overview: five guided words in about a minute, with your sounds ranked weakest first.
Scores go from 0 to 100 and rank your own sounds against each other. They are not an exam grade or a certificate. Start with the sound the checker names as weakest, practise it, then check the same text again to see whether it moved.
The sounds that decide your accent
The quiet 'th' (think)
The tongue tip touches the bottom edge of the top teeth and the air flows over it; no voice, and the tongue never taps.
The buzzing 'th' (this)
The same tongue-behind-the-teeth position as in 'think', with the voice buzzing through it.
The English 'r' (red)
The tongue curls back or bunches up in the middle of the mouth and touches nothing at all, while the lips round a little.
The 'l' sound (love)
The tongue tip touches the ridge behind the top teeth and the voice flows around the sides of the tongue.
The short vowel in 'sit'
Short and loose: the tongue sits a little lower than in 'see' and the whole mouth stays relaxed.
The long vowel in 'see'
Long and tight: the tongue is high and forward and the lips spread as if smiling.
Scores rank your own sounds against each other so you know what to drill first. They are not an accuracy certificate and not an exam grade.
Questions
Is this pronunciation checker free?+
Yes. You get a few free checks a day with no account. The TonePerfect app adds daily practice with thousands of real English words, ordered by your weakest sounds.
Which accent does it check against?+
Standard American English. It checks whether each sound is clear rather than pushing you toward an accent, so you choose your own goal.
Is it an accent checker?+
It scores sounds, not your accent as a whole. An accent is the sum of the sounds you carry over from your first language, so the per-sound scores show which ones drift most.
What happens to my recording?+
It is sent to our scoring engine to be scored. Recordings are never published or shared.
Practice English every day
The app drills the sounds this test flags, with thousands of words and instant feedback on every take.
