Why you can't fix what you can't hear
Every serious Mandarin learner eventually hits the same three walls.
Native speakers won't correct you. Interrupting someone mid-sentence to fix their third tone is socially exhausting, so most people simply don't. You say something slightly off, they nod, reply 不错 (búcuò, "not bad"), and the conversation moves on. The mistake survives — sometimes for years.

That contour is compared against the expected shape for the tone: high and level for first tone, rising for second, low or dipping for third, sharply falling for fourth. 2. Initials: the consonant under the microscope
Mandarin has 21 initial consonants, and several pairs sound nearly identical to untrained ears: zh vs j, ch vs q, sh vs x, z vs c. Spectral analysis examines acoustic properties such as aspiration (is there a burst of air, as in p, t, k?) and place of articulation (tongue curled back for retroflex zh, ch, sh vs flat for palatal j, q, x) to decide whether the consonant you produced was the right one.
3. Finals: vowels and nasal endings
Finals are checked through their formant frequencies — the resonances that make an "a" sound different from an "e" — plus whether you ended on the correct nasal. That last part matters more than beginners expect: 晚 (wǎn, evening) and 网 (wǎng, net) differ only in -n vs -ng.
The reference for all three dimensions is Standard Putonghua, 普通话 (pǔtōnghuà), with a reasonable tolerance range — because no two native speakers sound exactly identical either.
What the scores actually tell you

- It needs a target. A checker evaluates you against a specific expected text. It cannot follow free conversation the way a teacher can, and it cannot coach spontaneous speech, rhythm, or pragmatics.

- Edge cases exist. Very noisy rooms, whispering, heavy background music, or clipped recordings can produce unreliable scores. If a result looks absurd, re-record before drawing conclusions.
