A Russian pronunciation test is worth taking because Russian's hardest sounds are the ones learners do not know they are getting wrong. Almost every consonant comes in a hard and a soft version, one vowel, ы, has no equivalent in most languages, and unstressed vowels are not said the way they are written. You can read Cyrillic perfectly and still sound like you are reading.
This guide explains what a Russian test measures, how to read the result, which sounds learners most often lose, and how to practise each one. You can record the five test words right here, and the free Russian pronunciation test takes about a minute in your browser, with no account.

Why Russian is hard to judge by ear
Soft and hard consonants. брат (brother) and брать (to take) differ only in whether the final т is soft. A soft consonant is said with the middle of the tongue raised toward the palate, as if a tiny "y" were built into it. English has nothing like it, so learners often do not hear the difference at all.
Spelling hides the vowels. In молоко (milk) only the last о is stressed; the first two are reduced and sound closer to "a". Stress can fall on any syllable and moves between forms of the same word, and textbooks rarely mark it.
Listeners are forgiving. Russian speakers usually understand an accented speaker from context, so the hard/soft distinction or a flat ы can survive for years without correction.
How a scored Russian test works
The TonePerfect test uses five words:
- быть (to be): the ы vowel plus a soft ть at the end
- рука (hand): the rolled р
- день (day): two soft consonants, дь and нь
- хорошо (good): the breathy х, the hard ш, and unstressed о reduced toward "a"
- ещё (still, more): the long soft щ
You record one word at a time, and each word gets one score out of 100 as soon as you finish it. At the end, your five words are ranked from weakest to strongest, and the weakest is named together with the sound it was chosen to test. The five-word test stops at the word: it does not show a separate score for each sound inside it. For that level of detail, the TonePerfect app scores every sound in every word you practise, and the Russian practice page does the same for any text you paste.
What your score means
Russian scores are relative. They rank your sounds against each other to find your weak spots:
- The lowest word is the finding. If быть scored well below рука, your ы or your soft ть is the problem, whatever the absolute numbers are.
- No pass/fail bars. We do not map the score to a level or claim a percentage of correctly said sounds.
- Compare your own takes. The useful comparison is your быть today against your быть next week.
- Re-record surprises. Noise or a clipped start can sink one take.
The sounds that cost learners the most
ы
ы is made with the tongue pulled back and high while the lips stay spread, not rounded. Start from "ee", then slide the tongue back without moving your lips. Learners say "ee" or "i", which turns быть (to be) toward бить (to beat).
Soft consonants
A soft consonant is made with the middle of the tongue raised toward the hard palate at the same time as the consonant. мать (mother), день, быть all end in one. The two common mistakes are ignoring the softness entirely, or adding a separate "y" sound after the consonant.
The rolled р and the soft рь
Russian р is a trill or tap of the tongue tip against the ridge behind the teeth, never an English r. The soft рь of теперь and говорить is the same trill with the middle of the tongue raised.
ш, щ, ж and х
ш and ж are always hard: the tongue is pulled back, giving a darker sound than English sh. щ is long and soft, the sound in ещё and женщина; English speakers flatten it into plain "sh". х is a breathy friction at the back of the mouth, as in хорошо and хлеб, not an English h and not a k.
Vowel reduction and stress
Unstressed о becomes "a": хорошо is roughly "khuh-ra-SHO". Saying every о as a full "o" is one of the most recognisable accent markers. Learn each word with its stress, because the stress decides which vowels reduce.
How to improve each kind of weak sound
| If this scores lowest | Do this |
|---|---|
| ы | Say "ee", keep the lips spread, pull the tongue back. Alternate бить/быть, мил/мыл slowly. |
| A soft consonant | Say the consonant with your tongue already in the "ee" position, without adding a "y". Contrast брат/брать, мат/мать. |
| р | Tap the tongue tip quickly against the ridge behind the top teeth: "t-d-r". Then рука, раз, говорить. |
| щ or ш | ш: tongue back, lips slightly rounded. щ: tongue forward and high, hold it longer. ещё, женщина. |
| A vowel in an unstressed syllable | Mark the stress, then reduce the rest: молоко, хорошо, говорить. |
Each sound has its own page with mouth position, real course words and audio: see all Russian sounds and the Russian pronunciation guides.
Pronunciation test, accent test or checker?
Same engine, different framing. The Russian pronunciation test ranks which sounds are weak; the Russian accent test uses the same five words to show how strong your accent is overall; and if you searched for a checker, the Russian pronunciation checker runs the same scoring.
What a test cannot tell you
A test scores the words it asked for. It does not judge intonation across a sentence, grammar, word choice or how natural you sound in conversation. Use it to find and fix specific sounds.
Take the test, then fix one sound
Take the free Russian test, note your lowest word and spend a week on its sound alone. Then take it again. The TonePerfect app drills each Russian sound across real words and scores every take, so the sound your test flagged becomes your daily drill.
