Is there a Chrome extension that checks my pronunciation?
Yes, a few, and they work differently. TonePerfect has five free extensions (Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and French AI Pronunciation Trainer): select text on any page, right-click, and it opens on toneperfect.app, where you record it and get a score for every word and every sound. For English only, TalkDrill scores the sentence you highlight word by word, also on YouTube subtitles; Pronuncia gives sound-level feedback in a card on the page, with a free account; and Phonicly.ai scores single words against an American accent. Many other “pronunciation” extensions only read text aloud.

Facts (checked 30 October 2026)
- TonePerfect publishes five free Chrome extensions: Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and French AI Pronunciation Trainer, all live on the Chrome Web Store.
- Each one adds a right-click item for selected text and a popup with a text box; the text opens on that language’s practice page on toneperfect.app, where the recording is scored.
- The extensions ask for one permission, context menus: no access to the pages you visit, no content scripts, nothing stored by the extension.
- The practice page gives a few scored takes a day for free, with a score for each word and each sound and the weakest sound named.
- Spanish, German and Russian have the same practice page on toneperfect.app but no extension yet.
TonePerfect’s five extensions
All five work the same way. Highlight a word, a line or a sentence on any website, right-click and choose the TonePerfect item. The practice page opens with your text, you press record, and you get a 0–100 score for the take, each word and each sound. The popup also has a text box and quick-practice tiles for each language’s signature sounds. The scoring happens on the website, not in the extension, which is why the extension needs no access to the pages you read.
Chinese AI Pronunciation Trainer
Mandarin: the tone of every syllable, scored separately from its initial and final. Chrome Web Store
English AI Pronunciation Trainer
English: every word and every sound, against a standard American English reference. Chrome Web Store
French AI Pronunciation Trainer
French: every word and every sound. Chrome Web Store
Japanese AI Pronunciation Trainer
Japanese: mora by mora, with furigana added; pitch accent is not scored. Chrome Web Store
Korean AI Pronunciation Trainer
Korean: every jamo, against the way the text is actually said, with romanization added. Chrome Web Store
Other extensions that score your speech
TalkDrill (English)
Highlight a sentence on any site, or shadow YouTube videos line by line, read it aloud and get word-by-word feedback with an overall clarity score. 5 free checks a day without an account, 10 when signed in. Chrome Web Store
Pronuncia (English, for Spanish speakers)
Highlight English text up to 100 characters and practise it in a card on the page, with feedback “down to the level of individual sounds”. Built around Spanish-to-English sound patterns; a free Pronuncia account is needed for AI feedback. Chrome Web Store
Phonicly.ai (American English, single words)
Select a word, see its definition, hear it in an American accent, record yourself and get a score. Phonicly also sells a full American-accent course on its website. Chrome Web Store
Extensions that help you hear, not get checked
Hearing a word is useful, but it does not tell you whether you said it right. For that, the tool has to record you and score the recording.
Check Pronunciation
An independent extension (not by ELSA) that opens the word you select on ELSA Speak’s pronunciation site; words only, last updated October 2024.
Speakerly: Read Aloud & Vocabulary Builder
Reads pages aloud, translates and saves words; the speaking drills for saved words are in its mobile apps, not in Chrome.
Pronouncey
Shows how English words are said in real-life video clips. Listening, not scoring.

FAQ
Is there a Chrome extension that checks my pronunciation?
Yes. TonePerfect has five free ones (Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and French AI Pronunciation Trainer): select text, right-click, record it on toneperfect.app and get every word and every sound scored. For English, TalkDrill scores highlighted sentences word by word, Pronuncia gives sound-level feedback with a free account, and Phonicly.ai scores single words.
Do these extensions work in other languages than English?
TonePerfect’s cover Mandarin Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and French; the others listed here are English only. For Spanish, German and Russian, TonePerfect’s practice pages work in the browser without an extension.
Is the TonePerfect extension free?
Yes. The extensions are free, and the practice page gives a few scored takes a day with no account. The TonePerfect app adds a free tier with daily limits and a Premium subscription.
Can the extension read the pages I visit?
No. TonePerfect’s extensions only ask for the context-menu permission. The text you select is passed to the practice page when you click; the extension itself stores nothing.
Does it work on YouTube subtitles?
You can select any text you can highlight and right-click. TalkDrill has a dedicated YouTube shadowing mode that pauses after each subtitle.
