Is there an AI pronunciation coach that works for several languages?

Yes. TonePerfect is one: you record yourself in any of eight languages (Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese or Korean) and it scores the whole recording, each word and each sound, plus the tone of every syllable in Mandarin. The best-known pronunciation coaches, ELSA Speak and BoldVoice, are for English only. Multi-language conversation apps such as Praktika and Speak give pronunciation feedback inside conversations and lessons, and for a human ear in ten languages, Speechling’s coaches reply to your recordings.

Facts (checked 30 October 2026)

  • TonePerfect scores pronunciation in 8 languages: Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Korean.
  • Each recording gets a score for the whole take, for each word and for each sound; in Mandarin the tone of each syllable is scored separately from its initial and final.
  • Each language is scored against its own native reference; English is scored against standard American English. Japanese is scored for sounds and timing, not pitch accent.
  • TonePerfect does not tell you which sound it heard instead, does not score intonation and does not give a CEFR, HSK, JLPT or TOPIK level.
  • The browser tests and checkers on toneperfect.app are free with no account, a few scored takes a day. The app runs on iOS, Android and the web, with a free tier with daily limits and a Premium subscription.

What “works for several languages” should mean

Many apps teach a lot of languages but check pronunciation in only some of them, or check it only as right or wrong. Before you choose, check three things for every language you need: that speaking is scored at all in that course, how finely (the whole sentence, each word, or each sound), and what it is compared with. French should be judged against French, not against English.

A quick test works on any app: say a word correctly, then say it again with one sound deliberately wrong (French “dessus” as “dessous”, Spanish “pero” as “perro”, a Mandarin word with the wrong tone). If both takes pass, that app is not listening to that sound.

The options, by what they actually check

  • TonePerfect (wrote this page)

Eight languages, each scored against its own native reference: a 0–100 score for the take, each word and each sound, and in Mandarin each syllable’s tone. Free browser tests in every language, no account; the app adds daily guided practice. It is a pronunciation coach, not a conversation partner. See all eight courses.

  • Speechling

Human coaches give feedback on your recordings, within 24 hours, in ten languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It has a free plan and paid unlimited tutoring. Not instant, but a person listens.

  • Praktika

AI tutor conversations in several languages, with “instant, gentle corrections on pronunciation, grammar, and word choice”. Tap “?” on a message you said to get an overall and a per-word score. Built for conversation first; iOS and Android.

  • Speak

Speaking lessons and an AI tutor for English speakers learning Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Italian or Chinese, with real-time pronunciation feedback. iOS and Android; a 7-day free trial, then a subscription.

  • ELSA Speak and BoldVoice

Pronunciation coaches for English only, with feedback at the level of individual sounds. If English is the only language you need, see the ELSA Speak alternatives for a closer comparison.

  • A tutor

Marketplaces such as italki list tutors in 150+ languages; teachers set their own prices and you pay per lesson. A good tutor hears everything, including rhythm and intonation, but only during the lesson.

How to use a coach across languages

  1. Take each language’s free test once to get a baseline: five words, a score each.
  2. Practise the sentences you actually need, not random drills: paste them into the language’s checker and record them.
  3. Work on the lowest-scoring sound first, then record the whole sentence again.
  4. Re-take the same test after two weeks. The same words, the same room, a comparable score.

FAQ

Is there an AI pronunciation coach that works for several languages?

Yes. TonePerfect scores pronunciation in eight languages (Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Korean): a score for each word and each sound, and in Mandarin for each syllable’s tone. The free browser tests need no account.

Which languages does TonePerfect score?

Eight: Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Korean. Every one is scored word by word and sound by sound. Japanese is scored for sounds and timing; its pitch accent is not scored.

If I learn French, is my French judged against English?

No. Each language is scored against a native reference for that language. Only English itself is scored against a standard American English reference.

Are ELSA Speak and BoldVoice available for other languages?

No. Both are built for people improving their English. For other languages, a multi-language coach such as TonePerfect, a human-feedback service such as Speechling, or a tutor are the options.

Can an AI coach replace a teacher?

Not entirely. An AI coach listens every time you practise and tells you which sound to work on; a teacher also explains why, and hears rhythm and intonation, which TonePerfect does not score. They work best together.

Is it free?

TonePerfect’s browser tests and checkers are free with no account, a few scored takes a day. The app has a free tier with daily limits and a Premium subscription.
