TonePerfect vs Ka Chinese Tones
Ka (the App Store name is “Ka: Learn Chinese Tones”; the website calls it “Ka Chinese Tones”) is a fast, swipeable flashcard game for hearing Mandarin tones and similar-sounding syllables. If your problem is that mā and mǎ sound the same to you, Ka is built for exactly that, and TonePerfect’s ear games are a smaller part of our app. It’s free to download, and its yearly upgrade costs less than ours. TonePerfect starts at the other end: you speak, and every syllable is scored for its tone, its initial and its final. Every Ka fact below comes from Ka’s own website, App Store listing or Google Play listing, checked on 2026-10-20.

What Ka Chinese Tones does better
- ✓Built for ear training first: “a fun, fast-paced flashcards game” with “plenty of listening and pronunciation practice via quick, snappy drills”. TonePerfect’s ear games (Tone Sprint, Tone Twins, Falling Tones) are a smaller part of the app
- ✓It drills similar syllables as well as tones, so you learn to tell shi, si and xi apart
- ✓A long, structured ladder: an April 2023 post on Ka’s blog describes 100+ levels, each focused on one syllable, with tones practised alone and within phrases and sentences
- ✓Cheaper to upgrade: US in-app purchases are Ka Unlimited $6.99, Ka Unlimited (Yearly) $47.90 and All Access $12.99, and its site says the app is “free to use”
- ✓More Apple platforms — iPhone, iPad, Apple-silicon Mac and Vision Pro — plus Android, with the interface in English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish
Where TonePerfect goes deeper
- ✓Detail on your speaking: Ka’s site says its speaking exercises “tell you if you mispronounce any word or tone” but doesn’t describe how detailed that is. TonePerfect scores every syllable in three parts — tone, initial and final
- ✓You can speak whatever you’re studying: HSK words, sentences or any text you type, not only the app’s own cards
- ✓It tracks your weak spots: syllables are ranked weakest-first and the app picks what to drill next, with drills for tone pairs, tone changes, initials and finals
- ✓No install needed to try it: the Mandarin pronunciation test, the tones test and the checker run free in any browser with no account; the app is on iOS, Android and the web
Bottom line
Your main problem is hearing tones? Start with Ka: it’s a dedicated, game-style ear trainer with speaking exercises mixed in. You can hear them, but your own tones and sounds still come out wrong in words and sentences? Use TonePerfect for a score on every syllable, with tone separated from consonant and vowel. Ka trains the ear; TonePerfect checks the mouth. Both are free to start.

Frequently asked questions
Can Ka check my pronunciation?
Ka’s website says it has “speaking exercises that tell you if you mispronounce any word or tone”. Its site and store listings don’t describe the feedback in more detail. If you want a separate score for each syllable’s tone, initial and final, TonePerfect is built around that.
Is Ka free?
It’s free to download, and its site says “Free to use”. The US App Store lists optional in-app purchases: Ka Unlimited $6.99, Ka Unlimited (Yearly) $47.90 and All Access $12.99. The listing doesn’t say what the free version limits.
Is Ka on Android?
Yes. Ka’s site links a Google Play listing (“Ka: Learn Chinese Tones” by Kai Loh), which shows an update on 2026-09-30.
Is there an app that checks my Mandarin tones when I speak?
Yes. TonePerfect records you and scores each syllable’s tone separately from its initial and final. You can try it without installing anything with the free Mandarin tones test. Ka’s speaking exercises also flag mispronounced words or tones, per its site.
Should I train my ear before I practise speaking tones?
Ka’s own blog argues that training your ear is the quickest way to start, and our free tone quiz is built on the same idea. You don’t have to wait until listening is perfect, though. Hearing a tone correctly doesn’t guarantee you produce it, so it helps to check your speaking too.
Is “Ka” the same as “Pinyin Trainer”?
No. Ka’s site has a “Web Pinyin Trainer”, and its blog calls Ka a “pinyin trainer app”. The app usually called “Pinyin Trainer by trainchinese” is a different app from a different developer, with its own comparison page: TonePerfect vs Pinyin Trainer.
