TonePerfect vs Pinyin Trainer

This page covers the Pinyin Trainer by trainchinese: “Chinese Pinyin Trainer” on the App Store (seller trainchinese B.V.) and “Chinese Pinyin Trainer Lite” on Android. Other apps use similar names, so check the developer before you install. It has been around since 2010 and is still updated — a redesign came out in June 2026. It’s a focused listening trainer: you hear one of almost 2,000 recordings and tap, choose or even draw the tone you heard, and it drills easily confused initial consonants as well as tones. TonePerfect works the other way round: you speak, and each syllable is scored for its tone, initial and final. Every Pinyin Trainer fact below comes from its own store listings or trainchinese.com, checked on 2026-10-20.

What Pinyin Trainer does better

  • ✓A dedicated listening trainer for tones and initials: the iOS listing says it trains “both Chinese tones and Pinyin ‘initials’ sounds, to help you distinguish between commonly-confused words”
  • ✓A large, purpose-recorded audio set: “almost 2,000 high quality original audio recordings”
  • ✓Several answer formats, including tone sketching (“answer tone questions by drawing Pinyin tones with your fingers”) and, on Android, multiple choice and a review of challenging words
  • ✓Reference built in: a guide to reading pinyin with “a complete index of one-syllable Chinese sounds”, and lookups in the trainchinese Chinese-English dictionary
  • ✓Low cost: free to download; the US iOS in-app purchases are a “Pinyin Tutor Upgrade” at $5.99 and a “12-month 10-list subscription” at $37.99
  • ✓Many interface languages (English plus 14 more on iOS), plus zhuyin (bopomofo) and traditional characters on Android

Where TonePerfect goes deeper

  • ✓It listens to you: Pinyin Trainer’s listings describe no recording or speech scoring. TonePerfect records each word or sentence and scores every syllable’s tone, initial and final
  • ✓Real words and sentences: tones change in connected speech, as in 3+3 sandhi (你好 is said ní hǎo). TonePerfect scores the tones you actually say in pairs and sentences, and you can practise any text you type
  • ✓A plan, not just a quiz: syllables are ranked weakest-first and the app picks what to drill next — tones, tone pairs, initials, finals and tone changes, plus short ear games
  • ✓Works on the web: the Mandarin test, the tones test and the checker run free in any browser with no account. A web version of Pinyin Trainer is not stated on the pages we checked

Bottom line

Want to train your ear for tones and initials, cheaply, with tone drawing and a pinyin reference built in? Use Pinyin Trainer. Want to know whether your own tones and sounds are right when you speak, syllable by syllable? Use TonePerfect. Pinyin Trainer’s listings describe listening, tapping and drawing, but no recording of your voice, so the two cover different halves of tone practice and work well together.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pinyin Trainer check my speaking?

Not according to its listings. They describe listening challenges, tapping the word you hear, multiple-choice quizzes and drawing tones with your finger, but no recording or speech scoring. The Android description says it will help you “hear and produce” the tones, but the features it lists are all listening and drawing.

Is Pinyin Trainer free?

It’s free to download. The US App Store lists two in-app purchases: “Pinyin Tutor Upgrade” ($5.99) and a “12-month 10-list subscription” ($37.99). The listing doesn’t state what each unlocks. The Android version is called “Lite” and is labelled “Contains ads”.

Is there an app that checks my Mandarin tones?

Yes. TonePerfect records you and scores each syllable’s tone separately from its initial and final. Try it without installing anything with the free Mandarin tones test. Pinyin Trainer is a listening trainer rather than a speaking checker.

Which Pinyin Trainer do people mean?

Usually trainchinese’s app. It’s “Chinese Pinyin Trainer” on the App Store (id376797304) and “Chinese Pinyin Trainer Lite” on Google Play, and an answer on trainchinese’s own Q&A board calls it “the Pinyin trainer” and links both listings. Ka’s website also has a “Web Pinyin Trainer”, which is a different product.

Is Pinyin Trainer still updated?

Yes. The App Store shows version 5.0.0 on 2026-06-16, which refreshed the design, added dark mode and added more languages. Google Play shows an update on 2026-02-28.
