Questions and short answers
How does TonePerfect score pronunciation?
It aligns your recording with the text you were asked to say and scores the whole recording, each word and each sound inside each word, from 0 to 100.
Does TonePerfect check Mandarin tones?
Yes. It scores the tone of every syllable you say, separately from the syllable's initial and final, and shows which tone it heard.
Can TonePerfect help with my English accent?
Yes, for the sounds of English: it scores every sound of every word you say against a standard American English reference and flags the sounds that stay weak for you.
Which languages does TonePerfect support?
Eight: Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Korean, each scored per recording, per word and per sound.
Is TonePerfect free?
Partly: the browser tests are free with no account, the app has a free tier with daily limits, and Premium is a paid subscription.
Which devices does TonePerfect work on?
iPhone and iPad, Android and the web app; the free tests run in a phone or desktop browser, and there are Chrome extensions for five languages.
How accurate is TonePerfect?
No accuracy figure has been published. The scores are a practice signal for comparing your own recordings and finding your weakest sounds, not a certification.
Is TonePerfect the Michigan State “Tone Perfect” database?
No. TonePerfect is an independent pronunciation app and is not affiliated with Michigan State University's “Tone Perfect” research database of Mandarin syllables.
What happens to my recordings?
On toneperfect.app they are used to compute your score and not stored unless you opt in to research; in the app, scored recordings are saved with your account until you delete it.
