Which pinyin did you hear?
Pinyin has about a dozen sound contrasts that English ears merge into one: zh vs j, ch vs q, sh vs x, the -n/-ng finals, u vs ü. If you cannot *hear* the difference, you cannot say it — and you cannot look words up, type, or trust your own listening. This quiz plays a real syllable spoken by a Mandarin voice and asks which pinyin you heard.
Every round is a minimal pair (or triple) with matching tones, so the only difference between the options is the exact sound under drill. Miss one repeatedly? What is a minimal pair?
Two syllables differing by exactly one sound: sì vs shì, bàn vs bàng, lù vs lǜ. Drilling them is the fastest known way to teach your ear a contrast your native language does not use.
Which pinyin sounds are hardest for English speakers?
The four "hissing" pairs — zh/j, ch/q, sh/x, z/zh — plus the nasal finals an/ang and en/eng, and the rounded ü (green 绿 lǜ vs road 路 lù). This quiz drills exactly those.
Why do I hear a character instead of the bare syllable?
The voice reads a real one-character word with that exact reading (十 for shí), because speech synthesis pronounces characters natively while raw pinyin text is unreliable. The answer always shows the character and its meaning.
