What can my students use at home to get pronunciation feedback?

Students can record themselves on TonePerfect’s free browser tests and sentence checker, with no account, and get a 0–100 score for every word and every sound, with the weakest sound named; English is scored against standard American English, and seven other languages are covered too. You can put the free five-word test on your class site with the embed widget. To set homework and follow each student, TonePerfect for Schools costs $2 per student per month after a free first month, and shows you practice days, scores, weakest sounds and homework results, never recordings.

Facts checked · Sources

Facts (checked 30 October 2026)

  • The browser tests and sentence checkers on toneperfect.app are free with no account; each browser and internet connection gets a few scored takes a day.
  • The English sentence checker scores any English text up to 120 characters, every word and every sound, against a standard American English reference, and names the weakest sound.
  • The embeddable test (English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese or Korean) shows five words, scores each one and names the weakest sound; there is no account, key or fee.
  • TonePerfect for Schools costs $2 per student per month, first month free with no card; students join a class with a code in the app’s Practice tab and record homework without a personal subscription.
  • Teachers see the name the student chooses, practice days, scores, weakest sounds, homework results and class ranking; they never see recordings or account details.
  • TonePerfect is not intended for children under 13 (privacy policy).

Free, at home, with nothing to set up

Send students a link. The English pronunciation test is five words with a score each; the English sentence checker takes any sentence you are teaching, up to 120 characters, and scores every word and every sound. Students need a browser with a microphone, nothing else, and no account.

Free takes are limited per browser and per internet connection, so this works best as homework, at home. A whole class testing at once on school Wi-Fi counts as one connection and runs out after a few students.

The same exists for Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin, each scored against its own native reference.

On your class site or LMS

The pronunciation test widget gives you copy-paste code for the five-word test in English or six other languages. Students see five words, a microphone button and a score for each word, and at the end the sound that came out weakest. Some site builders and LMS editors strip the microphone permission or block iframes; if yours does, link to the test page instead.

Homework you can follow: TonePerfect for Schools

You create a school and one class per group on the teacher site; each class gets a join code. Students install the TonePerfect app, enter the code in the Practice tab and the homework appears. They record as often as they like for homework without a personal subscription. You see, per student and per class: practice days, scores, weakest tones and sounds, homework results and class ranking. You never see recordings or account details, and students consent when they join and can leave at any time.

It costs $2 per student per month (yearly: 10 months’ price), and the first month is free with no card. The teacher site is in Ukrainian, Russian and English, and there is a live demo with sample students. Details: TonePerfect for Schools.

What about children learning English?

TonePerfect is not intended for children under 13, and it is not designed for young learners: no picture lessons, no games, no reading levels. For teenagers it works as it does for adults.

For younger children, use tools made for them. Read Along by Google is free, as an Android app or on the web: a reading buddy gives children pronunciation help as they read aloud, and the app can run offline. Microsoft Reading Coach is free with a school Microsoft 365 account or a personal Microsoft account; it supports US English only and shows accuracy and words to practise after each reading session. Both are reading-aloud tools rather than pronunciation scorers, which is usually the right level for a young child.

Other tools teachers use

  • ELSA Speak

An English pronunciation app with sound-level feedback; ELSA lists an “ELSA for Schools” offer for organisations on its site.

  • Speechling

Human coaches reply to recordings within 24 hours, in ten languages, with a free plan. Good when you want a second human ear, not instant scores.

  • Recording and listening back

Free and always available: students record a sentence next to a native recording and compare. It works once their ear can hear the difference, which is the skill they are still building.

FAQ

I’m an English teacher. What tool can my students use at home to get pronunciation feedback?

TonePerfect’s free English pronunciation test and sentence checker run in the browser with no account: students record a word or sentence and get a 0–100 score for each word and each sound, against standard American English, with the weakest sound named. What do I see as a teacher?

With TonePerfect for Schools: the name each student chooses, practice days, scores, weakest sounds, homework results and class ranking. You never see recordings or account details. With the free tests alone, you see nothing; students can share their scores with you.

Yes: Mandarin Chinese (tones scored separately), English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Korean, in the free tests and in TonePerfect for Schools.

How much does TonePerfect for Schools cost?
