Color words are early vocabulary in any language, but in Chinese they carry unusual cultural weight: red (红) means luck and celebration, white (白) belongs to funerals, yellow (黄) was reserved for emperors yet now labels adult content, and a green hat (绿帽子) accuses its wearer of being cheated on. Getting the word right is easy — knowing when a color is loaded is the useful part.
The pattern is simple: color + 色 (sè, "color"). 红 is "red" as a root, 红色 is "the color red". Modifiers 深 (dark) and 浅 (light) work on any color: 深蓝色 dark blue, 浅绿色 light green. Every entry here has audio — most color words are excellent tone practice, since 红 hóng, 黄 huáng and 蓝 lán are all rising second tones learners routinely flatten.
Why is red so important in China?
Red symbolizes luck, joy and vitality — weddings, New Year decorations, and the red envelopes (红包) of gift money are all red. It is the default festive color.
What colors should I avoid as gifts?
Never gift a green hat (implies infidelity), and avoid wrapping gifts in plain white or writing names in red ink — both carry funeral associations.
How do I say light blue or dark red?
Put 浅 (qiǎn, light) or 深 (shēn, dark) before the color: 浅蓝色 light blue, 深红色 dark red.
