Animal words are early vocabulary with unusually high cultural mileage in Chinese. The twelve zodiac animals show up in small talk every January; 马 (horse) is the textbook third-tone example; and half the words are little compound stories — panda is "bear-cat" (熊猫), giraffe is "long-neck deer" (长颈鹿), zebra is "striped horse" (斑马).

Watch the everyday forms: the zodiac sign is 鼠, but a real-life mouse is 老鼠 with the same 老 prefix as 老虎 (tiger) — it is not "old", just how the word works. And two animals carry social landmines: calling someone a 乌龟 (turtle) is an insult, and 鱼 (fish) is served whole at New Year because it puns on "surplus". The notes flag each one.

Why do 老鼠 and 老虎 start with 老 (old)?

It is a fossilized noun prefix, not the adjective "old" — like the 子 in 兔子. Several everyday animal words need it: 老鼠 mouse, 老虎 tiger, 老鹰 eagle. The zodiac uses the bare classical forms 鼠, 虎.

Which animal words should I learn first?

The pets and zodiac set: 猫 cat, 狗 dog, 鱼 fish, 鸟 bird, 马 horse, plus 熊猫 panda for cultural credit. They are all HSK-1/2 words and cover most conversations about animals.

Is there a measure word for animals?

只 (zhī) covers most animals: 一只猫, 两只鸟. Exceptions: 条 (tiáo) for long bendy ones like fish and snakes (一条鱼), 匹 (pǐ) for horses, and 头 (tóu) for big livestock.
